How to Answer "How Do You Measure Product Success?"

This question reveals whether you think about products through the lens of outcomes rather than outputs. Interviewers want to see that you can define what success looks like before building, select the right metrics for the product stage, and use data to iterate rather than simply shipping and moving on.

A strong answer connects metrics to business strategy and demonstrates that you understand the difference between vanity metrics and actionable ones.


What Interviewers Are Really Assessing

  • Metrics literacy: Do you know the difference between leading and lagging indicators?

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Listing metrics without context: Saying "I track DAU, MAU, and NPS" without explaining why those metrics matter for your specific product sounds generic.
  • Ignoring lagging indicators: Focusing only on real-time metrics without connecting them to long-term outcomes like retention and LTV.
  • Metrics without decisions: The point of measurement is action. Always include how a metric informed a product decision.
